The Council is an independent advisory body appointed by the Minister of Health. We map out the cancer control field and keep those working in it focused on our shared goals.

- In 2004, lung cancer was the third most common cancer site registered for men and the fourth most common cancer site registered for women.
- Lung cancer is preventable. Around 90% of lung cancer cases are caused by tobacco smoking
- In 2004, lung cancer was the leading cause of death from cancer for men and the second for women
