Northern Cancer Network

The Northern Cancer Network has been set up to help the northern region of New Zealand to achieve the objectives of the New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy and Action Plan. The network brings together four district health board (DHB) districts, covering 1.47 million people, and includes the cancer centre at Auckland Hospital.

Purpose

The Network introduces a new way of working. Its purpose is to enable everyone involved in cancer – the providers of cancer services, primary care, consumers, public health and non-governmental organisations – to work collaboratively to improve outcomes for cancer patients and make the jouney for them and their carers or whānau a smoother one.

Who is Involved?

The Network’s partners come from across the northern region. They work at different stages of the patient’s journey:

    • northern region district health boards (DHBs)
    • non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
    • GPs and primary health organisations (PHOs)
    • cancer service providers
    • patients and their carers or whānau
    • hospices
    • research organisations.

Links

The Network has links with:

    • cancer services planners and providers in Auckland, Counties Manukau, Northland and Waitemata DHBs
    • non-governmental or non-profit organisations such as the Cancer Society, Child Cancer Foundation, Leukemia Foundation, hospices and consumer groups such as Breast Cancer Aotearoa Coalition.
    • National cancer groups such as the Cancer Control Council and the NZ Cancer Treatment Working Party.

The Network is governed by a five-member Network Executive Group with DHB and Māori representation and the chair of the Network’s Regional Cancer Collaborative. The collaborative brings together representatives from NGOs, Māori, Pacific and consumer groups and primary care
