Publication Date: 01 August 2007

August 2007 Chair's welcome Welcome to this first e-news from the Cancer Control Council of New Zealand and the launch of the Council’s new website: www.cancercontrolcouncil.govt.nz On the website you’ll find news, events and stories from the cancer control community, a new section on the four regional cancer networks, as well as details of the Council’s work. I’d like to thank the many people who have contributed to the website and look forward to updates on your work being posted on it. Over time, and with your help, we can make this the place to find out what’s happening in cancer control in New Zealand. Welcome continued Dame TizardThe website and this e-news also introduce the Council’s new logo and design. I’m grateful to the people who took part in interviews about how they saw the Council and its role and work. I hope you will see your thoughts reflected here. (See below for the thinking behind our logo). Next week the Minister of Health, Pete Hodgson, will launch the Council’s first evaluation and monitoring report, Mapping Progress: The First Two Years of the Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005-2010. This report is an important milestone in the Council’s work. It is two years since the many organisations involved in controlling cancer in New Zealand started work to put the Action Plan into operation. It is now time to look at how far we have come and what more needs to be done. We will mail a copy of the report, along with a summary version, to all our stakeholders. The report will also be posted on our website. This e-news replaces the Council’s stakeholder updates. We will email it to all our stakeholders every two months, following the Council’s meetings. I look forward to receiving your feedback on the website and this e-news, which you can email to: office@cancercontrolcouncil.govt.nz Do save the website address in your favourites and make sure you pass it on to your colleagues. Dame Catherine Tizard Chair Register for updates from the Council’s website link to stories from the fieldYou can keep up with what’s happening in the cancer control community by registering for updates on the Cancer Control Council’s new website. You’ll find a ‘register’ button on the home page where you can choose to receive an email alert every time we add new material to the site. Or, if you prefer, you can receive news by RSS feed. While you’re in the site, test out the events calendar which brings together conferences, symposia and meetings that are happening in cancer control. We hope this will keep you up to date with what’s happening, in New Zealand and elsewhere, and make it easier next time you’re finding a date to hold a conference. On the news page you’ll find updates and media releases from the Council as well as the many organisations helping to control cancer in New Zealand. You’ll also find a section called Stories From the Field which brings together stories from people working across the cancer control field. We will continue to add to these. Make sure you send us your news and events, or stories about working in cancer control, so we can include them on the website. The site will be as good as you help us to make it. New Council logo new logoWhen we asked our stakeholders in the cancer control community how they saw the Cancer Control Council’s role they talked about us guiding with right action and right direction. This is how our logo evolved. It reflects our presence and vigilance – watchful from above, hearing people’s voices below, guiding from behind and leading the way out in front. We anchor these four cornerstones so that those in the field deliver, to those who need it, a healthy body, family, mind and spirit – tinana, whānau, hinengaro and wairua.
