Our Work

Cancer Council Meeting

The Cancer Control Council has a wide-ranging work programme for 2007/08 which includes the following areas.

Evaluating, monitoring and reviewing cancer control activities

In July, the Council presented its first evaluation and monitoring report to the Minister of Health. The report, which was launched to the cancer control community in August, maps the community’s progress towards achieving the Phase 1 milestones of the Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005-2010.

During the coming year we will start mapping progress against Phase 2 of the Action Plan and lead the overall review of the Cancer Control Strategy to generate the next Action Plan for 2010-2015.

The Council has also initiated the 2007/08 New Zealand Adult Cancer Experiences Survey (ACCESS). This project aims to measure cancer care by examining various dimensions of the cancer care journey from the patient’s perspective. We have commissioned Public Health Intelligence (PHI), the Ministry of Health’s epidemiology group, to manage this project on our behalf

Reducing inequalities with respect to cancer

One of the two overall purposes of the Cancer Control Strategy is to reduce inequalities with respect to cancer. The Council will undertake further monitoring to map progress in achieving the outcomes and actions relating to cancer-related inequalities in the Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005-2010

Building relationships with stakeholders across the cancer control continuum

The Council will continue to build relationships with stakeholders across the cancer control continuum by helping and supporting the development of the four Regional cancer networks

We will also look at the need for a national Cancer Control Collaborative and investigate how such a collaborative could best work. And we will continue to develop this website so that it becomes the place to go to find out what is being done to control cancer in New Zealand.

Internationally, we will continue to develop linkages with other countries that have experience in the cancer control field.

Developing a strategic approach to cancer control research

The Council will continue to work with the key research agencies to develop a strategic plan for cancer control research in New Zealand. This will include setting up a working group to advise on how a strategic planning approach might be developed and implemented.

This work will be informed by the Council’s stocktake of cancer research in New Zealand, Developing a Strategic Plan for Cancer Control Research in New Zealand

Areas to be scoped

The Council has identified the following areas for action which we will scope during 2007/08:

  • addressing the sustainability of the cancer control workforce
  • prioritising tobacco control
  • implementing new technologies in cancer control.
