The 2009 Cancer Care Survey: the experience of people accessing outpatient treatment services for their cancer during a 6-month period

From Monday 8 June 2009, some (former) cancer patients will receive a survey about their experience of cancer care. A survey like this has not been done before across NZ.

RECORD RESPONSE TO CANCER PATIENT EXPERIENCE SURVEY

Cancer patients have responded in droves to a first of its kind survey in New Zealand exploring patient experiences of cancer care.

The Cancer Control Council of New Zealand has received 2,239 responses or a 66 percent response rate to its patient care survey, which has now closed.

The Cancer Control Council will shortly release the initial results of the first every survey of cancer patients’ experiences of their care.

A report detailing the national results from the survey will be available here shortly.

Regional data will be online later in December.

Voice of Experience — results of the 2009 Cancer Care Survey

For the first time people who need outpatient cancer treatment have been surveyed to gauge their experiences in the public health system.

Initial results show that overall satisfaction with the publicly funded outpatient cancer care system is very high — with 97 percent satisfaction levels. Although patients who responded to the survey generally rated the quality of care and services overall very highly, ratings for certain aspects of care could be improved.

This report documents the proceedings of a Stakeholder Forum, held by the Cancer Control Council on 26 October 2007 at the Marion Davis Library, Auckland City Hospital campus, Auckland. The forum was held to obtain feedback on the Council’s Mapping Progress evaluation and monitoring report (published August 2007) and to assist the Council in refining and formulating its future evaluation and monitoring focus and workplan.

Steady progress on cancer strategy

Steady progress has been made during the first two years of turning the Cancer Control Strategy into action.

More than 70 percent of the milestones in the first phase of the Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan have been achieved or are in progress. But more needs to be done in some areas.

These are the findings of the Cancer Control Council’s first evaluation and monitoring report, Mapping Progress: The First Two Years of the Cancer Control Strategy Action Plan 2005-2010.

Funding of Cancer Research Uneven

At least $100 million was committed to cancer research in New Zealand in 2003-2005. Most of this, nearly 80 percent, was invested in research relating to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the first comprehensive stocktake of cancer control research in New Zealand shows.

The stocktake, carried out by the Cancer Control Council of New Zealand, shows research investment is spread unevenly across the different areas of cancer control and the goals of the New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy.

Early detection is the best protection. That’s one of Valerie Pennick’s key messages as she speaks about breast health and breast cancer around the country.

Valerie is a qualified radiation therapist who has worked for 30 years in oncology in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United States.

Now she’s helping women throughout New Zealand to be aware of any changes in their breasts and to know what to do if they notice something.

Understanding what turns on and turns off apoptosis, or cell suicide, promises to provide a new range of tools for fighting cancer.

Dr Mark Hampton is part of the Free Radical Research Group at the University of Otago, Christchurch.

Apoptosis should be switched on when something goes wrong in a cell, such as when it gets damaged or begins to grow out of control, Dr Hampton explains.
