Cancer-related organisations

ASH: Action on Smoking and Health

Committed to preventing the uptake of smoking among young people and reducing the prevalence rate of smoking among all New Zealanders, particularly Mäori and pregnant and young women. Website offers a comprehensive list of links to New Zealand smokefree organisations.

Breast Cancer Aotearoa Coalition

A united consumer voice working to make world class detection, treatment and care accessible to all those affected by breast cancer in New Zealand. Provides information, support and representation, empowering those with breast cancer to make informed choices about their treatment and care. Website has links to the 21 breast cancer-related organisations in New Zealand that the coalition represents.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation

Aims to reduce the number of New Zealanders who die from breast cancer and to improve outcomes and quality of life for those affected. Website has a full list of links to breast cancer sites in New Zealand and elsewhere.

Cancer Control Trust

Responsible for leading the development of New Zealand’s Cancer Control Strategy in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

Cancer Society of New Zealand

Dedicated to reducing the incidence of cancer and ensuring the best cancer care for everyone in New Zealand. Website information supports the commitment to working with communities and providing core services in health promotion, support, information and research. The site has a comprehensive list of links to cancer-related sites that the Cancer Society considers offer credible and responsible information.

Cancer Trials NZ

Supports, fosters and conducts cancer clinical trials in New Zealand with an emphasis on active collaboration, encouraging participation from potential investigators and representatives from special interest groups. Website has links to various trials groups and organisations and good clinical research practice sites.

CancerVoices

Empowers people affected by cancer to have their voice heard, help shape policies and services and participate equally and effectively in consultation and research forums. Website has links to CancerVoices in the United Kingdom and Australia.

CanTeen

Supports young people living with cancer. Website carries stories of young people between the ages of 13 and 24 who have been diagnosed with cancer or who have had brothers or sisters with cancer.

Child Cancer Foundation

Provides practical, emotional and financial assistance to children, and their families, whose lives have been changed forever by cancer. The foundation also supports the health professionals who treat children with cancer and invests in research into the late effects of the disease. Website has links for parents as well as children.

Hospice New Zealand

Hospice New Zealand is the national body for all hospices throughout the country. Website contains information for health professionals, educational opportunities, local hospice profiles and contacts and links to other organisations relating to palliative care in New Zealand and elsewhere.

Leukaemia & Blood Foundation

A not-for-profit organisation that provides information specifically for patients and families affected by leukaemia and related blood conditions. Support Services Co-ordinators offer a comprehensive array of help, from someone at the end of the phone to more practical assistance, such as support groups, disease-specific booklets and information. The Leukaemia and Blood Foundation also funds research and provides education and patient advocacy.
National Cancer Information Network

New Zealand’s password-protected website for cancer care practitioners to share protocols, guidelines and project information. The website is run by the New Zealand Guidelines Group, an independent, not-for-profit agency that develops evidence-based resources for health care practitioners, physicians and consumers.

Prostate Cancer Foundation

Educates people about prostate problems and prostate cancer in particular. Website has a list of prostate cancer specialists throughout New Zealand.

Smokefree Coalition

Committed to preventing the uptake of smoking among young people and reducing the smoking rates of all New Zealanders. The coalition provides a collective voice for its 23 member organisations. Website has links to a range of smokefree, tobacco control and public health organisations.

SunSmart

The Health Sponsorship Council works closely with the Cancer Society of New Zealand to reduce the proportion of New Zealanders who develop and die from skin cancer. Much of this work is managed under the SunSmart™ brand. Website has links to a range of skin cancer-related organisations in New Zealand and elsewhere.

Te Reo Märama: Mäori Smokefree Coalition

Dedicated to tobacco resistance which aims to reduce smoking by targeting the tobacco industry rather than individuals. Website has links to a range of Mäori health and smokefree sites in New Zealand and elsewhere.

The New Zealand HPV Project

Provides support and education for people with human papillomavirus (genital warts and/or HPV), educates the public about this common infection and works alongside medical and health professionals to ensure people with HPV receive optimal management. Website has links to a number of sites relating to human papillomavirus.

The Quit Group

Offers telephone support, information and low-cost nicotine patches and gum to help people quit smoking (0800 778 778). Visit the website to join the online quit community.

Ministry of Health

Cancer Control

Overview of the Cancer Control Strategy and Action Plan and the Ministry’s cancer control work programme. Website carries information on cancer treatment in New Zealand, the formation of regional cancer networks and waiting times data.

National Screening Unit

A unit of the Ministry of Health which provides health screening programmes, including breast and cervical screening programmes. Website has links to BreastScreen Aotearoa and the National Cervical Screening Programme.

New Zealand Health Information Service (NZHIS)

Group within the Ministry of Health responsible for collecting and disseminating health-related data. Website carries the main statistical publications on cancer in New Zealand.

Public Health Intelligence

The Ministry of Health’s epidemiology group which has the Ministry’s statutory responsibility to monitor the health of the New Zealand population. Website carries a number of cancer-related surveys and publications including the New Zealand Tobacco Use Survey.

International

Cancer Australia

A new Australian Government agency established to help reduce the impact of cancer and reduce disparities in outcomes for some groups in Australia. Cancer Australia’s work includes four main areas – consumer interests, quality and professional development, research and policy.

Cancer Institute New South Wales

Australia’s first statewide, government-supported cancer control agency. Website has sections for patients and carers, health professionals, researchers and the institute’s Standard Cancer Treatment protocols programme (CI-SCaT).

NHS Cancer Programme for England

Web portal providing one central resource for cancer-related information in England. It has links to some of the major areas of work and services for patients, the general public, National Health Service (NHS) staff and other healthcare professionals involved in cancer care.

World Health Organization – cancer control

Home page for cancer control on the WHO website. Provides cancer facts, reports, publications and national cancer statistics from around the world.
